An unpublished work by Giosetta Fioroni on display in Venice

'Coupure' exhibition opened in Venice, focusing on sign. Among the works on display is an unpublished work by Giosetta Fioroni.

The exhibition Coupure. From Sixties to Now, in the spaces of the Giardino Bianco on Via Garibaldi, in front of theArsenale. It is a group show of contemporary artists featuring the extraordinary participation of Giosetta Fioroni (Rome, 1932), who was among the exponents of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo (along with Tano Festa, Mario Schifano and Franco Angeli: with them she exhibited at the 1964 Biennale). On display will be one of his unpublished drawings on paper, made in 1960: it has recently re-emerged on the market and was published in the artist’s last catalog. The work, characterized by childlike mark-making and bright colors, demonstrates a clear closeness to the manner of Cy Twombly (Lexington, 1928 - Rome, 2011), an artist Giosetta Fioroni had approached in the 1960s.

The show also features Sergio Maria Calatroni, Pietro Finelli, Giorgio Galimberti, Paolo Manazza, Maurizio Orrico, Marialuisa Tadei, Mauro Vettore and Wiebke Maria Wachmann: the subject of the exhibition is sign."Coupure,“ reads the presentation, ”defines and maps a topography of the sign, understood in the double valence of an element that generates and leaves a trace, but also that which re-cuts, conforms a space and defines it through a work of assembly/disassembly. The work, which approximates a body, is di-signed by the artists, constructed, painted, designed. All this relates to the physical space of the city, but it also defines a mental one that is a generator of drives, attractions, osmosis. A space is never something neutral, the very act of placing something there triggers a series of coordinates, which will turn out to characterize, from time to time, and the artist’s work, and the space that welcomes it."

Curated by Bustos Domenech, the exhibition is open until March 30, Thursday through Sunday, from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pictured is Giosetta Fioroni’s unpublished work: Untitled (1960; mixed media on paper, 38 x 52.5 cm; provenance: Rome, Galleria Il Segno)
