At the Chamber of Deputies an exhibition-tribute to Tato, inventor of airplane painting

From Nov. 21 to Dec. 6, 2019, the Chamber of Deputies pays homage to the inventor of aeropainting: futurist artist Tato with an exhibition.

The Chamber of Deputies is hosting from November 21 to December 6, 2019 an exhibition dedicated to Guglielmo Sansoni, aka Tato (Bologna 1896 - Rome 1974), entitled Tato futurista. Inventor of Aeropainting.

Marking the 100th anniversary of Tato’s meeting with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, the exhibition aims to present, through selected works of aeropittura by Tato, the enthusiasm and visionary power of theFuturist era, as well as the primary role of theItalian avant-garde at the dawn of the 20th century.

Tato is the Italian Futurist artist, inventor and father of aeropainting, and the exhibition will feature some twenty-six works, including oils on canvas, tempera on paper, paintings on ceramics, and original period photographs, focusing on the emotional vision of the Italian landscape as seen from new and unexplored vantage points such as airplanes in flight.

Selected works include Sorvolando in spirale il Colosseo (Spiraling), Aeroplani + Metropoli, Paesaggio in velocità - scivolamento d’ala, Sport, Avvitamento, all made in 1930, Sorvolando Sabaudia (1934), Spiralata (1936), Volo notturno (1936), Atterrando (1937), Sensazioni di volo II tempo (1929), Il dirigibile Italia al polo Nord (1928), Alba futurista (1926).

Aeropainting and his enthusiasm for flight and aerial speed punctuate the images by planes of color, re-presenting Italian places and landscapes in aerial perspective. The theme of the view between nature and modernity is thus linked to the narrative of the transformations of space between rurality and urbanization of an evolving Italy.

The exhibition is curated by Salvatore Ventura on a project and coordination by Cornelia Bujin.
