From Dec. 6, 2023 to March 17, 2024, the Museum of Palazzo Grimani in Venice is hosting a major monographic exhibition dedicated to David "Chim" Seymour, one of the founders of Magnum Photos.

The Museum of Palazzo Grimani in Venice welcomes from December 6, 2023 to March 17, 2024 a major monographic exhibition dedicated to David “Chim” Seymour, one of the founders of Magnum Photos. DAVID “CHIM” SEYMOUR. The World and Venice. 1936-56, this is the title of the exhibition curated by Marco Minuz and promoted by the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate - Museum of Palazzo Grimani in collaboration with Suazes, under the patronage of the Polish Embassy in Rome, presents about two hundred pieces including photographs, documents, letters and period magazines. Represented in the one hundred and fifty selected images, placed chronologically between 1936 and 1956, will be the Polish photographer’s most important reportages, such as France in 1936, the Spanish Civil War, Europe after World War II, the 1948 project entitled Children of War, commissioned by UNICEF and dedicated to war orphans, Israel and Egypt in the 1950s. To these are added the series Portraits and Personalities, and the aforementioned core of photos made in Venice.

Rounding out the description of Chim’s universe are some fifty documents, including a section with some documents devoted to the Maleta Mexicana, the Mexican suitcase full of photographic treasures that were thought lost forever (related to the Spanish Civil War) and instead found with surprise in Paris in 1995 and now owned by the ICP in New York.

In 1950 David “Chim” Seymour produced an important reportage devoted to Venice. Shots depicting moments of daily life or specific details of the lagoon city.

“This exhibition is part of a specific project that aims to introduce the artistic production of famous masters of photography and at the same time show their reportages dedicated to the lagoon city, exhibiting them within the wonderful spaces of Palazzo Grimani,” explains the curator.

The exhibition is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed Mondays.
