At the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, the first exhibition on TV series, from Twin Peaks to Squid Game

From Oct. 14, 2024 to Feb. 24, 2025, the National Cinema Museum in Turin will host the first exhibition in Italy dedicated to television series from the 1990s to the present.

In Turin, the National Cinema Museum is hosting on the Mole Antonelliana’ s reception floor the exhibition #Serialmania. Narrative Imaginaries from Twin Peaks to Squid Game, curated by Luca Beatrice and Luigi Mascheroni. On view from Oct. 14, 2024 to Feb. 24, 2025, it is the first exhibition project in Italy dedicated to TV series, exploring the deep connection between cinema and TV series from the 1990s to the present, showing mutual influences, common themes, but also differences.

The exhibition itinerary follows a dual line: chronological and thematic, with a focus on twelve iconic series: Secrets of Twin Peaks, Friends, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, E.R. Doctors on the Front Line, The Simpsons, Sex and the City, The Crown, The Iron Throne, Squid Game, Crime Novel, and Sea Out.

Throughout the exhibition, artistic references are numerous: from the melancholy atmospheres of Gregory Crewdson’s photographs, reminiscent of Twin Peaks, to Alejandro Cartagena’s Car Poolers images, evoking the events of Breaking Bad. Some series explicitly cite works of art, as in the case of Squid Game, which draws inspiration from Escher ’s work to exemplify the angst of the dystopian future. Mario Schifano is a kind of anti-hero in the Rome of the 1970s protagonist of Romanzo criminale.

The exhibition, enhanced by the catalog published by Silvana Editoriale, offers accessibility tools, including an orientation map, an introductory video in LIS and downloadable content with QR codes for highly readable texts, English translations and multilingual audio.
