At Villa Manin, Capucci's sumptuous gowns dialogue with illusionistic perspectives

Villa Manin in Codroipo (Udine) presents from May 6 to September 17, 2023 the exhibition "Roberto Capucci. Perspectives at Villa Manin," curated by the Capucci Foundation, which is based in the same villa.

From May 6 to September 17, 2023, Villa Manin in Codroipo (Udine) hosts the exhibition Roberto Capucci. Perspectives at Villa Manin, curated by the Capucci Foundation.

The Foundation preserves the clothes and manages the creative legacy of Roberto Capucci and has been based right at Villa Manin since 2017. The gowns chosen for this exhibition, made since the 1980s, are among the celebrated designer’s most sumptuous formal and evening inventions. They are joined by a selection of real sculptures in the form of dresses. In particular, dresses designed for the centenary of the Venice Biennale and for the Capucci Museum already housed at Villa Bardini in Florence will be on display. Wedding dresses will include the dress inspired by Tiepolo’s fresco La Continenza di Scipione at Villa Cordellina in Montecchio Maggiore and again the Red Bride created for the Palazzo Fortuny exhibition (2009). Also on display are Fuoco, Ventagli and Primavera, the latter characterized by the more than one hundred fabric flowers applied on silk organza, in the same style as the famous purple dress created for actress Valentina Cortese.

The exhibition will also be an opportunity to admire the magnificent halls of the villa’s prospects. Closed during fire retrofitting works, these will amaze visitors with their fantastic illusionistic perspectives that will create a dialogue with the architectural three-dimensionality that distinguishes Capucci’s creations.

The dresses, placed in the illusionistically decorated rooms by Pietro Oretti, a mysterious yet fascinating Bolognese painter known only for the work he did at Villa Manin around 1710, will give the impression of bringing back to life the villa’s 18th-century splendor, when in the background of the painted perspectives moved ladies in sumptuous dresses like those of Roberto Capucci.

Finally, enriching the exhibition will be a selection of drawings and sketches that will give the opportunity to deepen the imagination and better understand the creative process of the designer.
