Bologna, at Palazzo Pallavicini the ultrapop universe of Giuseppe Veneziano

From June 16 to September 18, 2022, Palazzo Pallavicini opens its summer season with the opening to the public of True Stories, the true stories told with the provocative approach of new pop painter Giuseppe Veneziano.

True Stories is the anthological exhibition chronicling the world of Giuseppe Veneziano (Mazzarino, Caltanisetta, 1971), considered among the leading exponents of the New Pop current and the Italian Newbrow group, with which Palazzo Pallavicini in Bologna opens its summer season. Curated by Valerio Dehò and organized by Chiara Campagnoli, Deborah Petroni and Rubens Fogacci’s Pallavicini srl, the exhibition is scheduled from June 16 to Sept. 18, 2022.

Comics and cartoons represent the world in which the artist is immersed and the atmosphere into which the exhibition will lead visitors, a place where high culture and popular culture coexist and clash, revealing through “true stories” the contradictions of contemporary reality. The weaknesses and false myths that surround us are laid bare with an ironic and provocative approach that has always distinguished Veneziano’s work. The artist portrays himself as the Mona Lisa, imitates Dali, who in turn mimics Velázquez as he paints Snow White; Spiderman takes the place of Jeff Koons; and the Girl with the Pearl Earring takes a selfie without veils. The result is a mash up in which everything coexists, past, present and future coincide and every distance inexorably shortens.

Comic book superheroes and myths of the past meet the characters and objects of the present in a wide-ranging anthology, in which there is no shortage of forays into art history, from Goya to Raphael. The exhibition intends to present itself as a celebration, “a great beauty” in bright and flamboyant tones, standing as a symbol of a contemporary obsessed with technology and glamour, which is revealed through an off-the-cuff narrative in which political correctness is banished. There are many illustrious quotes and instantly recognizable public figures to whom the different sections of the exhibition are dedicated, divided into thematic areas and aimed at audiences of all ages.
