Carla Sozzani Collection brings Man Ray, LaChapelle and 71 artists to CAMeC in Spice

At CAMeC in Spezia, a selection of 150 photographs from the Carla Sozzani Collection recounts more than a century of visual experimentation, from reportage to fashion. The exhibition, curated by Maddalena Scarzella, is on view until March 22, 2026.

Photography as a language capable of transforming the gaze and producing new readings of reality is the focus of the exhibition Fotosintesi. Photographs from the Carla Sozzani Collection, set up at the Modern and Contemporary Art Center of La Spezia and open until March 22, 2026. The exhibition presents a selection of 150 works created by 73 artists, from the archives of the Sozzani Foundation in Milan, and offers an articulated journey within one of the most important photographic collections internationally.

Curated by Maddalena Scarzella, the exhibition offers a new interpretation of the Carla Sozzani Collection through the metaphor of photosynthesis. The reference to the natural process becomes a key to understanding photography as a medium in continuous transformation, capable of absorbing cultural and visual stimuli and returning them in the form of new images and narratives. In this sense, light is a generative principle that runs through the entire exhibition.

“With the new exhibition dedicated to great international photography, Fondazione Carispezia continues with conviction the path of relaunching CAMeC, carried out together with the City of La Spezia,” says Andrea Corradino - President Fondazione Carispezia. “The arrival of Carla Sozzani’s prestigious photographic collection represents a further step forward in consolidating the Museum’s role as a cultural hub of reference, capable of strengthening the attractiveness of the area even beyond local borders. It is a unique opportunity for our city: a dialogue of the highest level between art photography and the CAMeC’s collections, which confirms the value of investing in culture as a lever of growth and innovation.”

“Seeing my collection take shape in the spaces of La Spezia’s CAMeC, a place that holds such a significant photographic collection, fills me with joy and pride,” comments Carla Sozzani - President Sozzani Foundation. “I feel a deep gratitude to Director Grulli and the entire museum, c who have welcomed and supported this project with confidence, making it a reality.”

Journalist, publisher and gallery owner, Carla Sozzani has built her collection over more than fifty years, following the evolution of photography from the first experiments of the twentieth century to the most recent research. The nucleus presented at CAMeC reflects this breadth of gaze, including works ranging from reportage to portraiture, from fashion photography to landscape, from performance to still life. The exhibition includes works by authors who have made a decisive mark on the history of photography. These include Karl Blossfeldt’s plant forms, Alfred Stieglitz’s famous clouds, Helmut Newton ’s nudes and Man Ray’s self-portraits. Alongside these works are Sarah Moon’s suspended atmospheres, Horst P. Horst’s formal elegance, Paolo Roversi’s research, László Moholy-Nagy ’s experiments, and David LaChapelle’s constructed images, in a dialogue that crosses different languages.

The exhibition is part of CAMeC’s cultural project, dialoguing with the museum’s permanent collection and strengthening its role as a center for study and research on modern and contemporary photography. The Carla Sozzani Collection has been presented in numerous international venues, including Paris, Berlin, Naples and Madrid, and was recently featured in the exhibition Between Art & Nature, also curated by Maddalena Scarzella.
