Contemporary art in Genoa: start of the fourth edition of the Biennale Le Latitudini dell'arte

Genoa kicks off the fourth edition of 'The Latitudes of Art' Biennial: this year's edition runs from July 20 to August 31, 2019.

Held from July 20 to Aug. 31, 2019, at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, the fourth edition of the contemporary art biennial Le Latitudini dell’arte takes place.

The exhibition, conceived and curated by Virginia Monteverde and presented this year by art critic Viana Conti, has the patronage of the Liguria Region, the City of Genoa and theEmbassy of the Netherlands. The Biennial was established in 2013 with the aim of promoting and encouraging artistic-cultural interchange betweenItaly and other European countries. This 4th edition, with the theme Water and Light, features the participation of 60 artists living and working in Italy and the Netherlands. As in previous editions, the artists were selected through collaboration with Galleries and Foundations in the two countries.

“Multimedia, on a linguistic level, and the liquid condition of the social fabric of postmodernity, theorized by political scientist and philosopher Zygmunt Bauman,” says Viana Conti, “recursively connote the artistic choices of the broad cultural landscape outlined by the curator. In an era of globalization, de-aestheticization of art versus a widespread aestheticization of a commodity-fetish, this society, with advanced capitalism, presents, inevitably, its tensions, its resolved or unresolved conflicts, its migratory flows, its desperate hope trips, its ecological degradation or recovery, its open questions about the present and the future. The scenario resulting from a selective panorama of thirty Dutch and as many Italian exponents, does not fail, in fact, to reflect the signs, the symptoms, the openings or closures of the horizon, which each artist, as a sensitive creative seismograph of the context that surrounds him, projects in his work.”

The 2019 edition of the Biennial Le Latitudini dell’arte also, in alliance with the Museums of Genoa circuit, invites visitors to the exhibition to take the Holland and Flanders - The Latitudes of Art in the Genoa of the Past itinerary, which runs between Palazzo Reale, Strada Nuova Museums, Palazzo Spinola National Gallery and Trust (Villa del Principe).
