Desenzano del Garda focuses on Picasso: a major exhibition at the castle with ceramics and etchings

From May 19 to August 29, 2021, Desenzano del Garda Castle will host a major exhibition dedicated to Pablo Picasso and the various aspects of his production.

Desenzano del Garda Castle is hosting from May 19 to August 29, 2021 an exhibition dedicated to one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso. Picasso ceramics and engravings, this is the title of the exhibition curated by Giovanni Tiboni and coordinated by Maurizio Stefanini of Stefanini Arte in Rimini and strongly desired by Culture Councillor Francesca Cerini, intends to present the different aspects of Picasso’s artistic production, thus highlighting his multifaceted nature.

On display are unique pieces that will allow the public to appreciate and learn about all facets of the artist, in particular, more than thirty ceramic works produced in Vallauris, the complete series of Le Celestine, and the full reproduction of the forty-two preparatory drawings of Guernica are exhibited.

In the ceramic works Picasso expresses all his creativity: once World War II ended, the artist devoted himself to this expressive language, which he discovered was particularly congenial to his creative vein, so much so that he began an experimentation that would accompany him for the rest of his existence, interweaving it with his works on canvas, his sculptures and his graphics.

The series of The Celestines consists of sixty-six etchings, aquatints and punteseches made in 1968 to illustrate the work of Fernando de Rojas, among the most important in Spanish literature. Engravings made with a disruptive and obsessive expressive urgency (from April 11 to August 18, 1968) by a now 87-year-old Picasso.

Completing the exhibition are full reproductions of the forty-two preparatory drawings for Guernica from the Prado in Madrid, a series of period photographs, and a significant collection of Affiches. Magnificent examples of these collections can be found in the Louvre in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, or MoMA in New York.

“We are restarting, and we want to do it in the best possible way,” said Councilor Cerini with satisfaction. “Culture in the last year has suffered so much, especially at the local level, and that is why we needed a big name that would bring back in citizens and tourists the desire to attend cultural places. And who therefore better than Picasso? Our choice fell on his works and the professionalism of Giovanni Tiboni and the Stefanini Gallery, which will also follow other initiatives we have planned during this 2021. The desire is to bring Desenzano toward a new cultural dimension, one that is increasingly strong and capable of living a life of its own, without necessarily resting on the strong shoulders of territorial beauty.”
