Exhibition in Cremona that brings together Gentileschi's two versions of the Rest During Escape postponed until March 2020

It will postpone to March 2020, contrary to what was announced, the exhibition Orazio Gentileschi. The Flight into Egypt and Other Stories at the Pinacoteca di Cremona.

Contrary to what was announced, the major exhibition Orazio Gentileschi. The Flight into Egypt and Other Stories scheduled from October 19, 2019 to February 2, 2020 at Cremona’s Ala Ponzone Art Gallery will slip to March 2020. This was announced by the City of Cremona’s Councillor for Cultural Systems, Luca Burgazzi.

Only in these days the MiBACT’s authorization regarding the arrival from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna of the exhibition’s star painting, the Rest during the Flight into Egypt, a masterpiece by Orazio Gentileschi, is being unblocked after a stalemate. This occasion will mark the work’s first return to Italy.

The Viennese loan is planned as part of an exchange with the Pinacoteca di Cremona, but only now is the long-awaited ministerial go-ahead looming that will allow both institutions to restart the bureaucratic process underlying the temporary exchange of the works. For this reason, it is necessary to postpone the exhibition until next March.

Alongside Gentileschi’s Viennese masterpiece, the major exhibition will also see another version of the Rest during the Flight into Egypt by Gentileschi himself, granted by a private collection. Thus, for the first time it will be possible to admire the two splendid canvases side by side. Also on display will be a selection of paintings, sculptures, ivories, and engravings that deal with the same theme of the Escape.
