From Michelangelo to Caravaggio: the new exhibition at the San Domenico Museums in Forli.

The next exhibition at the San Domenico Museums in Forlì has been announced : it is titled The Eternal and Time between Michelangelo and Caravaggio and will run from February 10 to June 17, 2018. The exhibition’s intent is to document a particularly intense moment in art history, from the sack of Rome (1527) to Caravaggio’s death (1610), a historical period in which the foundations of modernity were laid. “To be protagonists at the San Domenico,” the presentation reads, “will be the drama and fascination of a century that saw the disquieting pangs of a superb sunset, that of the Renaissance, coexisting with the progress of a new and luministic horizon, with great masterpieces of Mannerism. The demand to the Church of Rome for greater spiritual rigor, while on the one hand producing a renewed defense of sacred images (especially by the Ignatian Society of Jesus), also imposed a different focus on the composition and depiction of images, as well as a redefinition of sacred space and its ornaments.”

The exhibition will document all the new tensions of the time, probing the various schools, from Emilian to Venetian, then analyzing the Roman context where Caravaggio’s genius developed. Then there will be no shortage of insights into the interpretations of the Council of Trent and the devout and pious painting that resulted, with all the consequences at the iconological and iconographic level.

Among the artists announced: the last Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael, Lorenzo Lotto, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, as well as Sebastiano del Piombo, Correggio, Bronzino, Giorgio Vasari, Parmigianino, Daniele da Volterra, El Greco, the Carracci, Federico Barocci, Veronese, Titian, Federico Zuccari, Pellegrino Tibaldi, Cavalier d’Arpino, Giuseppe Valeriano, Scipione Pulzone, Guido Reni, and Rubens. The catalog will be published by Silvana Editoriale.
