From photography to the final work. In Miramare, an exhibition investigates a new aspect of Marcello Dudovich

From July 10, 2020 to January 10, 2021, the Scuderie del Castello di Miramare will host the exhibition Marcello Dudovich (1878 - 1962). Photography between Art and Passion.

An exhibition dedicated to the famous Triestine illustrator, poster artist, painter, muralist and photographer Marcello Dudovich opened on July 10 at the Scuderie del Castello di Miramare, open to the public until January 10, 2021.

Marcello Dudovich (1878 - 1962). Photography between Art and Passion, this is the title of the exhibition, intends to focus on a yet uninvestigated aspect of his production, namely the relationship between photography and the final work. The exhibition project is a collaboration between the m.a.x. museum in Chiasso and the Historical Museum and Park of Miramare Castle, and is curated by Roberto Curci and Nicoletta Ossana Cavadini.

“A beautiful collaboration between two border cities, Trieste and Chiasso, accustomed to border conjunctures,” commented Miramare Museum director Andreina Contessa, adding that the exhibition focuses on photography as a source of expression and in particular, "on a very particular aspect of the exhibition which is the representation of the female figure. Dudovich portrays emancipated, free, very elegant women, very modern for the first decades of the 20th century anticipating and epigonizing today."

The president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, anticipated that a decision was made to make a special card available to health care workers throughout Italy, who are on the front lines of health emergencies, so that they can access museums, historical sites, exhibitions, excursions and other services in the region free of charge.

Regional Councillor for Culture Tiziana Gibelli added that this "is an event of particular importance for Friuli Venezia Giulia, as it features a well-rounded artist, a son of this land, one of the first art directors in the field of advertising. This review gives us the opportunity to appreciate the grace, grace and elegance of his work."

The two curators presented the exhibition project in detail: Nicoletta Ossana Cavadini, director of the m.a.x. museum in Chiasso, emphasized the research profile linked to the passion for photography that becomes a salient element to understand the artist’s long life, his production and his inspiration that passes from the photo, to the sketch, to the sketch and then concludes in the finished work; Roberto Curci, among Dudovich’s leading experts, reconstructed the figurative path between the photos taken as preparatory material, a reservoir of ideas for the job of advertising graphic designer, and the finished product that could be the advertising poster or a magazine.

Andreina Contessa also anticipated an upcoming event dedicated to the many lenders of Dudovich’s works, in which models will be the protagonists: in particular, the model portrayed by the artist, Cristina Luce, who remembers well the years when her great-uncle portrayed her. It was the Belle Époque in Trieste in which women strolled alone on the beach with their dogs, had coffee at the bar and were portrayed by Marcello Dudovich, one of the most important references in the history of the poster in the 20th century.
