Gillo Dorfles' latest drawings on display at the Cini Foundation in Venice

On display until Jan. 31, 2022 at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice are Gillo Dorfles' "squiggles," his latest drawings made in 2017.

Until January 31, 2022, the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice is hosting an exhibition of the last drawings made by Gillo Dorfles a few months before his death in Milan on March 2, 2018. Ghiribizzi, this is the title of the exhibition, is curated by Aldo Colonetti and Luigi Sansone and brings together, in addition to the painting Vitriol from 2010 (an acronym of the Latin phrase “Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificando Invenies Occultum Lapidem”) and the drawing with the Latin saying Si ova truthionis sol excubare valet cur veri solis ope Virgo non generaret? from 1990 by Alberto Magno, a selection of twenty drawings executed by Gillo Dorfles in 2017.

“Gillo Dorfles has been an assiduous guest and participant in the activities of the Giorgio Cini Foundation,” commented Renata Codello, Secretary General of the Giorgio Cini Foundation. “But it is in his unprecedented capacity as a talented creative and ironic painter that we wanted to pay tribute to him and to enthusiastically welcome the proposal of an exhibition of his latest drawings.”

Drawing has always been a real passion for Dorfles. As can be seen in the drawings in the exhibition, he was capable of depicting a wide range of moods, mental and psychological perplexities and existential aphorisms, drawing the viewer into his world as a critic.

Also on display are his first book Discorso tecnico delle arti, published in 1952, and his latest book La mia America, from 2018; two photographs of him close the exhibition: one taken by Fabrizio Garghetti in 2010 while he was painting in Paestum and the other by Carlo Orsi in 2016, which captures him in his living room at the piano.
