In Bergamo, several international artists reflect on Covid in an exhibition

Titled "Statements," it is on view in Bergamo until Jan. 9, 2022, and is an exhibition in which many leading international artists (from Ed Atkins to Alfredo Jaar, Luigi Ontani to Regina José Galindo) reflect on Covid.

Running until Jan. 9, 2022 is Statements, an exhibition-symbol that synthesizes through new works by some of the world’s leading international artists the traumatic experience of the pandemic experienced by the entire world over the past two years. The exhibition is held at Palazzo della Ragione in Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo, a city symbolic of the COVID tragedy and the will to resist and restart. .

Cory Arcangel, John Armleder, Ed Atkins, Elmgreen & Dragset, Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg, Cao Fei, Regina José Galindo, Ryan Gander, Kendell Geers, Shilpa Gupta, Alfredo Jaar, Emily Jacir, Luigi Ontani, Yan Pei Ming, Diego Perrone, Jack Pierson, Paola Pivi, Pipilotti Rist, Pamela Rosenkranz, Marinella Senatore, Cally Spooner, Pascale Marthine Tayou, Goran Trbuljak, Nora Turato, Francesco Vezzoli, Lawrence Weiner are the internationally renowned artists who have accepted theinvitation to launch to the world their own statement in visual and textual form - a statement in fact - addressed to them by The Blank, an association that is today a point of reference in the contemporary scene.

Each artist’s statement will be presented both inside and outside Palazzo della Ragione: in fact, the Statements exhibition provides for both individual and collective enjoyment of the works. Each statement will be hung for one day on the balcony of Palazzo della Ragione, thus configuring itself as a message launched to the whole world, and later it will be placed in a room of the Palazzo, with the installation design by Maria Marzia Minelli, where it will be possible to see the exhibition of all the works.

In this complex and dramatic period, the words and images used to express thoughts and visions have often been uncertain and conflicting. The art world has been severely affected by the emergency and all the protagonists, from artists to institutions, have had to face an unprecedented situation.

This is how curator and artistic director of The Blank Stefano Raimondi expresses himself: “I believe that this project can be of great importance for culture because it testifies to the unity and solidarity of the contemporary art world and the need of artists and more generally of the whole sector to be heard in their statements. This exhibition encapsulates many messages that I hope can be embraced and shared. This project with such outstanding artists would never have been possible without the immense generosity of each of them in making new work in the form of a statement. I am proud to bring to my city, which has suffered incalculable drama, a project of such high international significance.”

Bergamo City Councillor for Culture Nadia Ghisalberti comments, “APalazzo della Ragione, located in the heart of the city and a symbol of its history, this special exhibition will literally be able to overlook and address everyone: the statements will be a manifesto of beauty and determination, and a call to share ideas and projects for the future. A very valuable contribution to the energy that is making our city grow toward 2023, the year when together with Brescia it will be the Italian Capital of Culture.”

All statements will be published in a special limited edition catalog of 250 copies published by The Blank Edition.

The exhibition is the result of a more general cultural understanding between the City of Bergamo and The Blank, aimed at enhancing and promoting Bergamo as a city of art and culture. The exhibition is also made possible by the support and contribution of Regione Lombardia, Fondazione UBI Banca Popolare di Bergamo, Fondazione della Comunità Bergamasca, and Isocell. The exhibition would not have been possible without the generosity of the artists and the organizational support of the galleries: Galleria Continua - San Gimignano, Beijing, Les Moulins, Habana, Rome, São Paulo, Paris; Massimo De Carlo - Milan, London, Hong Kong, Paris; Hauser & Wirth - Zurich, London, New York, Somerset, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Gstaad; Lia Rumma - Milan, Naples; Lisson Gallery - London, New York, Shanghai, East Hampton; Peola Simondi - Turin; P420 - Bologna; Spruth Magers - Berlin; M77 Gallery - Milan; Thomas Brambilla - Bergamo.
