In Bergamo the solo exhibition among the flowers of Luisella Traversi Guerra

From March 4 to 26, 2023, the former Church of the Magdalene in Bergamo will host Luisella Traversi Guerra's solo exhibition. A series of works that can be traced back to the beginnings of her artistic experience, when her research focused on floral subjects.

Theformer Church of the Magdalene in Bergamo will host Luisella Traversi Guerra’s solo exhibition entitled Beyond the Secret Garden from March 4 to 26, 2023. The exhibition intends to pay homage to the Piacenza-based artist through a series of works that can be traced back to the beginnings of her artistic experience, when her research focused on floral subjects, to flow into abstraction in the following years.

After taking her art to various nations around the world, from the United States to Germany, from Japan to France, from China to the Netherlands and beyond, Luisella Traversi Guerra is exhibiting for the first time in the city where she has lived and worked for 30 years.

Created in collaboration with The Blank association, the exhibition is loosely inspired by The Secret Garden, a novel written in 1910 that tells the story of a wonderful secret garden, made inaccessible, in which roses were grown. The author, Frances Hodgson Burnett, was passionate about gardening and considered this activity pedagogical and therapeutic, both mentally and physically. Painting played the same role for Luisella Traversi Guerra: an activity to which she devoted herself in parallel with all the other commitments that occupied her life, and which was a secret place in which to retreat, cultivating it as she went. Magnolia blossoms, irises, violets, hydrangeas, petunias and poppies are just some of the flowers one encounters in the exhibition, set in a green setting of plants surrounding the images.

Trees, flowers and plants are part of Luisella Traversi Guerra’s daily life; her studio, surrounded by a huge park, has always been her source of inspiration and well-being. The predisposition to care for greenery is the precondition that spontaneously brings the artist closer to the daily discipline of painting practice, in a symbiotic approach between the two dimensions.

The exhibition project also proposes a dialogue between ancient and contemporary art, that is, between the works of Luisella Traversi Guerra and the 16th-century frescoes by Cristoforo Baschenis the younger, preserved in the Church of the Magdalene.

Throughout the duration of the exhibition, side events will be organized during the weekend, such as a poetry reading by Luisella Traversi Guerra with musical interlude (Saturday, March 11, 5 p.m.), a panel discussion by philosopher Mauro Ceruti (Saturday, March 18, 4:30 p.m.), and a concert by soprano Jessica Pantarotto (Sunday, March 26, 5 p.m.).

Hours: Thursday through Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Free admission.
