In Düsseldorf the last Christo-approved exhibition before his passing

The Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf will host from September 7, 2022 to January 22, 2023 the last exhibition Christo approved shortly before his passing in May 2020.

From Sept. 7, 2022 to Jan. 22, 2023, Kunstpalast Düsseldorf will host the exhibition Christo and Jeanne-Claude. Paris. New York. Crossing Borders, curated by Kay Heymer and Sophie-Marie Sümmermann. It is thelast exhibition approved by Christo shortly before his death in May 2020. The starting point for the project is the extensive collection of Ingrid and Thomas Jochheim, which represents one of the largest private collections of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s art worldwide. Indeed, it includes large-scale objects and drawings, graphic works and photographs.

The exhibition thus traces the evolution of Christo and Jeanne-Claude ’s art from the mid-1950s until their demise, and introduces the artists’ early work made in France in the context of the works of numerous fellow artists. The exhibition presents every single project made by Christo and Jeanne-Claude starting with Wrapped Coast (1968/69). The exhibition also presents studies and drafts of the Mastaba project for Abu Dhabi, which has not yet been realized and has enormous dimensions, exceeding those of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Alongside Christo’s works, the exhibition will feature paintings and objects by Arman, Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Dubuffet, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein and many others in order to contextualize Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s art in 1950s Paris.

The Museum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte Schloss Gottorf will offer a modified version of the exhibition from March 10 to September 3, 2023.
