In Massa a confrontation between two masters of the 20th century: Ardengo Soffici and Ugo Guidi

Two great masters of the twentieth century, Ardengo Soffici and Ugo Guidi, face off in an exhibition from March 19 to April 2: this is the first stage of the cycle 'The Masters of the 1900s in Versilia' held at the Ugo Guidi Museum 2 in Massa.

Two great masters of the 20th century are compared: Ardengo Soffici (Rignano sull’Arno, 1879 - Vittoria Apuana, 1964) and Ugo Guidi (Montiscendi di Pietrasanta, 1912 - Forte dei Marmi, 1977): from March 19 to April 2, in the halls of the Bishop’s Palace in Massa, home of the Ugo Guidi Museum 2, the second branch of the Ugo Guidi Museum in Forte dei Marmi, the first stage of the cycle I Maestri del ’900 in Versilia, a series of exhibitions on 20th-century artists who distinguished themselves in the Apuo-Versiliese territory, is staged.

For this first exhibition, curated by Fiammetta Michelacci, there is a valuable selection of works by Ardengo Soffici and Ugo Guidi enriched by unpublished documents and testimonies of their frequentation in the intellectual environment of Versilia. The first guest protagonist of this appointment under the banner of art is therefore Ardengo Soffici with his pictorial background of the 1960s read with references to the well-established friendship that bound him to the famous sculptor Ugo Guidi and his birthplace and workshop in Vittoria Apuana.

Numerous sculptures by Ugo Guidi exhibited for the occasion to celebrate his work and artistic association with Ardengo Soffici, kindly granted by his sons Fabrizio and Vittorio Guidi. Vittorio Guidi writes: “The Ugo Guidi house-museum bears witness to the relationship that my father [...] had with the numerous group of artists, literary men and men of culture who frequented Forte dei Marmi from the 1950s to the 1980s. Ardengo Soffici, who had a house in Vittoria Apuana, met Guidi in the mid-1950s and following a careful visit to his studio and works wrote him a letter testifying to his work and appreciation of my father, who was able to evolve while respecting a sculptural tradition.”

Luigi Cavallo, art critic and curator of the Soffici Museum in Poggio a Caiano, emphasizes: “Versilia in the summer, Poggio a Caiano his usual residence in the other months, represented the alternation of Soffici’s creative cues, a sort of harmonic variants from which the artist did not want to disregard since the consultation of the real was the fundamental of his poetics, the bait that was able to bring to the surface the virtue of combining narrative elegance and luminous fragrance.”

The exhibition opens Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. For information +3932816003, direzione@museougoguidi2.it
