The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence is inaugurating CANTO INFINITO, a solo exhibition by Jean-Marie Appriou set up in the Project Spaceof Palazzo Strozzi. Curated by Arturo Galansino and open to the public from May 22 to August 23, 2026, the exhibition brings together a series of new works by the French artist, offering an overview of his research, now considered among the most innovative in contemporary sculpture.
Jean-Marie Appriou’s artistic practice is distinguished by constant experimentation with materials, including aluminum, bronze, glass, clay, and wax. Through a profoundly material and sensory approach, the artist gives shape to figures suspended in an indefinite dimension between human, animal and plant. His visual imagery draws inspiration from ancient myths, science fiction and contemporary culture: horses, snakes, sea creatures and hybrid creatures inhabit a symbolic universe in which forms seem to oscillate between water and earth, light and darkness, stability and transformation.
The title of the exhibition invokes the idea of perpetual movement, devoid of origin and conclusion, evoking a reality in which time, matter and imagination are constantly transforming. Conceived as moments of a single itinerary, the works on display refer to the cultural and symbolic legacy of the Divine Comedy. Appriou’s research is also intertwined with a vast network of literary and mythological references, which do not appear as static quotations, but as living presences, embedded in the material of the sculptures and fused within the exhibition itinerary.
Jean-Marie Appriou. CANTO INFINITO is promoted and organized by the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, and is supported by the City of Florence, Region of Tuscany, Metropolitan City of Florence, Florence Chamber of Commerce, Fondazione CR Firenze, Intesa Sanpaolo, Hillary Merkus Recordati Foundation, and the Committee of Partners of Palazzo Strozzi.
