The Museo Civico delle Cappuccine in Bagnacavallo, in the province of Ravenna, will present “In ponta d’pi. *Officina romagnola* is a photography exhibition curated by museum director Davide Caroli and Silvia Loddo, an art historian and photography scholar. The exhibition brings together works by fifteen artists and focuses on several collective photographic initiatives that have emerged in the Romagna region since 1986.
The exhibition’s title draws on a line from a poem by Nevio Spadoni and evokes an attitude that, according to the curators, unites the participating artists—who belong to different generations and can be traced back to what is known as the Romagna school of photography. The participating artists are Nicola Baldazzi/Veronica Lanconelli, Davide Baldrati, Cesare Ballardini, Michele Buda, Alessandra Dragoni, Cesare Fabbri, Marcello Galvani, Luca Gambi, Francesca Gardini, Guido Guidi, Gianluca Liverani, Francesco Neri, Luca Nostri, Francesco Raffaelli, and Giovanni Zaffagnini.
A central role in the exhibition is attributed to Guido Guidi, described as a mentor and fellow traveler to many of the artists involved. Guidi is now internationally recognized for his photographic research and for his teaching work, carried out primarily in Ravenna and Venice. His presence is part of a narrative that, according to the exhibition’s framework, has seen individual artistic endeavors develop alongside forms of collective creation in Romagna.
A special focus is dedicated to these collective projects, examining several photographic initiatives that emerged in the Romagna region beginning in 1986. The aim is to provide an initial overview of a body of work that has involved numerous photographers—both male and female—who have gained recognition at the national and international levels, as well as various collaborative endeavors. The exhibition begins with *Figli del deserto*(Children of the Desert), founded in Fusignano in 1986, and concludes with the *Scuola elementare di fotografia*(Elementary School of Photography), an initiative established in Ravenna in 2023.
The subtitle “Officina romagnola” refers to Roberto Longhi’s essay on 15th-century Ferrara painting and identifies Romagna as a context characterized by the presence of individual artists and, at the same time, by a propensity for collaborative projects, linked in part to the region’s cooperative tradition.
The exhibition also offers a reflection on the perspective that has developed within this context. Silvia Loddo defines it as “dialectal,” in the broadest sense of the term, referring to a language that has nourished the work of poets and photographers. What unites them is the ability to observe and capture the beauty of the ordinary through a direct relationship with the landscape, the local dialects, and the sounds of the region. Loddo, currently director of the Carlo Contini Art Gallery in Oristano, received her training in Bologna, Ravenna, Paris, and Siena, and for several years followed developments in Romagna’s photography scene while overseeing photographic observatory projects. Together with Caroli, she curated the exhibition project at the Cappuccine.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Municipality of Bagnacavallo and organized by the Museo Civico delle Cappuccine, with the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Region and support from Snam.
