Large group show on memory and metamorphosis at MAXXI L'Aquila

MAXXI L'Aquila presents the large international group show "Afterimage" through Feb. 19, 2023, which aims to be a reflection through images on the themes of memory and metamorphosis.

Through February 19, 2023, MAXXI L’Aquila presents the exhibition Afterimage, curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi and Alessandro Rabottini.

A large international group show featuring twenty-six artists of different generations, composed of new commissions and site-specific installations, historical works from the MAXXI Collection, and monographic rooms with works ranging from the 1960s to the present. The exhibition aims to be a reflection through images on the themes of memory and metamorphosis. A reflection on the coexistence of permanence and transience as a universal condition, rooted in the very nature of human existence, in the fate of artifacts, places, meanings and images.

The title of the group show refers to theoptical illusion called afterimage (i.e., residual image): a phenomenon whereby a visual stimulus, such as a camera flash, produces an impression on the retina that persists even after its own passing.

Visitors are invited to make intuitive and spontaneous associations between the works, the history and architecture of the rooms of Palazzo Ardinghelli and the history of L’Aquila. Moving through a wide variety of media, Afterimage brings together photography and video, spatial interventions, paintings and sculptures and explores the intersections between fragmented iconographies, changing materials, perceptual memories and bodies in transformation.

Four lines of narrative are proposed: the material and the memory, the shifting image, the unveiled body, and the inner architecture.

The artists in the exhibition are Francis Alÿs, Francesco Arena, Stefano Arienti, Benni Bosetto, Mario Cresci, June Crespo, Thomas Demand, Paolo Gioli, Massimo Grimaldi, Bronwyn Katz, Esther Kläs, Oliver Laric, Tala Madani, Anna Maria Maiolino, Marisa Merz, Luca Maria Patella, Hana Miletić, Luca Monterastelli, Frida Orupabo, Pietro Roccasalva, Mario Schifano, Elisa Sighicelli, Paloma Varga Weisz, Danh Vo, Dominique White, He Xiangyu.
