Madrid celebrates great Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri with exhibition of international importance

At the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, the exhibition 'The Map and the territory,' from Sept. 26, 2018 to Jan. 7, 2019, showcases the photographs of Luigi Ghirri.

The Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid is hosting, from Sept. 26, 2018 to Jan. 7, 2019, the exhibition "The Map and the Territory," dedicated to Luigi Ghirri ’s photographic shots taken in the 1970s. Ghirri(Scandiano, Jan. 5, 1943 - Reggio Emilia, Feb. 14, 1992), one of the greatest Italian photographers of the 20th century, executed photographs ofItaly’s landscapes, both natural and artificial. The exhibition, therefore, is a journey through the most important decade of his artistic research. In particular, a fundamental year for Ghirri is 1978: to that year dates the publication of Kodachrome, one of Ghirri’s most representative photographic books. It was followed the following year by one of the most famous exhibitions of the time, Vera Fotografia, held in Parma.

The exhibition is structured around the concepts of “territory” and “map,” ideas that reflect the world and how it is represented. The works exhibited in Madrid thus pick up on works that focus around these concepts, particularly works shown at the 1979 exhibition that include a survey of places Ghirri went to: urban suburbs, provincial Italy, natural landscapes, the gardens of Modena, amusement parks and more.

The exhibition on Luigi Ghirri, curated by James Lingwood and created at the initiative of the Reina Sofía Museum in collaboration with the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Jeu de Paume National Gallery in Paris, thus aims to offer a significant and representative journey into the photography of one of the great Italian masters of the last century.
