MAN in Nuoro dedicates exhibition to Matisse sculptor, little-known aspect of his career

From July 14 to November 12, 2023, MAN in Nuoro presents an exhibition on the sculptor Matisse, a little-known aspect of his production. About fifty works are on display, accompanied by an extensive collection of documentary material.

The MAN museum in Nuoro is hosting from July 14 to Nov. 12, 2023 the exhibition Matisse/Metamorphosis, an exhibition project that aims to shed light on a little-known aspect in the production of the famous French artist Henri Matisse, related to the relationship between painting and sculpture, and between sculpture and its ancient or archaic models.

The exhibition brings together some 50 works, accompanied by an extensive collection of documentary material, including period photographs and films. Intent is to trace an exhaustive parable on the artist’s path, demonstrating the evolutions of his quest as a sculptor, which went from emulating the masters to acquiring a personal and recognizable style.

The exhibition will start from Matisse’s early stages of research, through the identification of the models that most influenced his sculpture at a young age. From these initial passages, aimed primarily at theobservation of nature and classical models, it will gradually continue with the definition of an increasingly abstract style, expressed by an increasing stylization of the figures. The mature sculptures, relating to the second decade of the twentieth century, are from this period. Embracing more than 30 years of research, the exhibition aims to highlight the main moments and evolutions of Matisse-sculptor’s activity, without forgetting to emphasize juxtapositions with his pictorial production.
