Mao Jianhua's mountains in a multisensory exhibition in Florence, Italy.

From November 7 to 30, 2018, the Music Room of the San Firenze Monumental Complex will host the exhibition of Chinese painter, philosopher and poet Mao Jianhua (Changshu, 1955), entitled Mountains. Secret Harmony of the Earth, curated by Cristina Acidini, promoted by the Franco Zeffirelli Foundation, under the patronage of the City of Florence and with the collaboration of theAcontemporaryart Association.

Mao Jianhua’s exhibition offers visitors a multisensory experience: the author’s pictorial works intend to engage the public in an act of contemplation of nature, in search of the inner harmony and natural symphony that is captured through listening to the music of the guqin. The guqin, the traditional string instrument, which vibrates with the rhythm of the mountains and whose melodious and enveloping sound induces introspective silence, fosters a sense of recollection and meditation. Thus, the energy released by the sacredness of the mountains is transformed into artistic and poetic creation.
It is not the realism of the “real” that is narrated by Mao Jianhua in his majestic works, but the music of nature, its vibration, just like a guqin player.

Mao Jianhua was born in 1955 in Changshu. An internationally successful entrepreneur, he began painting 12 years ago almost by accident. Devoted from a very young age to the noble art of calligraphy, Mao Jianhua starts from an in-depth study of the “classics” of Shan shui (mountain-water) painting, which focuses on the depiction of landscape. He devotes himself to Taoism and Zen Buddhism, meditation, isolation, music, chess, calligraphy and painting, rediscovering the sympathetic relationship with nature.

It was in the Yellow Mountains, which he visited six times, that Mao Jianhua found his personal path to Shan shui painting, devotionally tending to every aspect of it, from the medium (paper), to the tools (brushes), to the color palette (inks).
The catalog produced to accompany the exhibition, entitled Mountains. Secret Harmony of the Earth, edited by Cristina Acidini, with texts by Cristina Acidini and Carla Casu, is available in the Zeffirelli Museum bookshop.
