Milan, Galleria Gracis celebrates 100 years since the birth of Antoni Tàpies with an exhibition

Until March 31, Milan's Gracis Gallery commemorates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies with an exhibition dedicated precisely to the great Catalan artist, one of the greatest interpreters of European informal art and a supreme protagonist of postwar Spanish art.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona, 1923 - 2012), Galleria Gracis is hosting until March 31 in Milan the exhibition Sign | Memory | Matter dedicated to the Catalan painter.

Tàpies, among the greatest interpreters of European informal art, is internationally recognized as the main protagonist of post-World War II Spain.

His works have always conducted an investigation between painting constructed through matter, sign and memory, just as the path of the exhibition will show the public in a significant and articulate way.

A painting that through materials, symbolism and declared stances, since his appearance in the international art limelight, has highlighted the harsh opposition to the Franco regime and the artist’s participation in the great temperament of avant-garde art throughout his career.

Tàpies’ “sign imagery” provokes moments steeped in “social alarm” and existential depth that have characterized his career culminating-among various exhibitions in the most important museums-with the Golden Lion for painting at the 45th International Art Biennial in 1993.

Antoni Tàpies thus returns to Milan, a city that wanted to celebrate him with a major anthological exhibition in 1985 at the Palazzo Reale, with in-depth shows at Galleria Bergamini, Galleria del Naviglio, Studio Marconi and Galleria Seno, making that Milanese moment one of the largest celebrations of the time dedicated to the artist.

The exhibition is curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, art historian and curator, one of the most influential figures among scholars of post-World War II art and Director of the Giorgio Cini Foundation’s Institute of Art History.

Antoni Tàpies, Sign | Memory | Matter exhibits a selection of 23 works illustrating the author’s creative evolution from 1959 to 2006. The exhibition is realized with the support of the Hillary Recordati Merkus Foundation and BEL Real Estate Group, remaining open to the public from Feb. 10 until March 31, 2023.

A catalog, published by Marsilio Arte, will be published on the occasion of the exhibition, with a text by the curator, writings from the 1985 Milan anthology, some of the artist’s treatises and long unpublished critical accounts.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. Saturdays by appointment.
