Pisa and the Fascist Regime. A photographic exhibition at Palazzo Blu

Palazzo Blu presents a photo exhibition on the Pisa of the Ventennio with archival images from that era. October 22, 2022 through March 26, 2023.

Images from the Ventennio. Pisa and the Fascist Regime (1922 - 1943), this is the title of the exhibition that will be on view at Palazzo Blu in Pisa from October 22, 2022 to March 26, 2023, conceived by Daniele Menozzi and curated by Giovanni Cavagnini.

In 2021 the Pisa Foundation purchased from the Allegrini family several thousand photographs (prints, films, plates) that Guido had taken mostly personally between the mid-1920s and the mid-1940s: images that represent a significant document of the life and history of those years. The exhibition thus presents Guido’s photos that, together with some others from public or private archives, show the events, personalities and customs of the time.

The exhibition itinerary, supported by a rich captioning system, proposes aspects and moments of the life of the city and its inhabitants following a precise narrative, chronological and thematic logical thread: the march and the conquest of power, the Conciliazione, the institutions of the Regime, Ethiopia and Spain, the Axis and the racial laws, the defeat and the ruins, but also the royal family settled for long months in San Rossore; the regime’s hierarchs (the philosopher Gentile, the undersecretary of the Interior Guido Buffarini Guidi, ministers Bottai and Ciano) and great entrepreneurs (Count Marzotto) active locally. A roundup of images, mainly from Pisa and therefore closely linked to the real life of the city, which nevertheless also recount the national and international events of those years, giving the visitor the opportunity to grasp through the images representative aspects of an entire era.

The photographic and documentary material comes from the Allegrini, Frassi and Salvestroni archives owned by the Pisa Foundation, and from other archives of private institutions and collectors.

The exhibition is accompanied by a volume published by ETS that contains contributions by Daniele Menozzi, Giovanni Cavagnini editor of the publication, Fabrizio Amore Bianco, Marco Giorno Bevilacqua, Andrea Mariuzzo, Paolo Nello and Christian Satto.
