From March 15 to May 15, Shazar Gallery presents the exhibition Alba by Andreas Steinbrecher (Chelikemir, Kazakhstan, 1984) curated by Valeria Shaefer. The Kazakh artist’s first solo show in Naples offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in the canvases of indefinite shapes, unreal landscapes, populated by solitary creatures and elements that accompany the observer on an alienating journey. In the spaces of Via Pasquale Scura, the exhibition itinerary unfolds through paintings with unusual silhouettes that when juxtaposed explore complex narratives and whose compositions rise as windows to inner universes. The artist’s experiments seem to take him in the wake of different times of art, between quotations and visual contrasts Steinbrecher reaches and adds constant contemporary meanings until reaching a very personal language.

In Steinbrecher’s artistic practice what immediately jumps out at you is the very personal idea of connecting forms on the canvas like modules to form new, larger compositions: an example are the works Rast of 2023 and Rast II of 2024. Autonomy is no longer the primary prerequisite for an image, rather it is the potential for a heterogeneous visual cosmos that allows space for a narrative, an emotion or a reflection on one’s corporeality. The artist conceives of his paintings as parts that come together in a shifting process to create a composition.

“Andreas Steinbrecher,” writes Marina Sammeck, “repeatedly integrates views of idyllic landscapes into his paintings, reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich’s places of nostalgia. In his exploration of landscape painting, one of the most authentic motifs in the history of classical art, Andreas Steinbrecher combines existing pictorial traditions with the idea of the landscape as an embodied structure in which the boundaries between inside and outside, man and environment, merge. The images also tell of a nature from which, frozen in iconic paintings, reels and breathtaking emoji, we fatally alienate ourselves more and more.”

Andreas Steinbrecher(Chelikemir - Kazakhstan - 1984) lives and works in Düsseldorf where he attended theAcademy of Art. He has exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions mainly in Germany, winning numerous awards.
