The city of Oudenaarde dedicates a retrospective to its Adriaen Brouwer, Flemish Baroque painter

The city of Oudenaarde is hosting a retrospective to Flemish painter of the Baroque period Adriaen Brouwer from September 15 to December 16, 2018.

Starting September 15, 2018, the Museum of Oudenaarde and the Flemish Ardennes (MOU) dedicates a retrospective to Adriaen Brouwer (Oudenaarde,1605 - Antwerp,1638), which can be visited until December 16, 2018.

The exhibition"Adriaen Brouwer. Master of emotions" presents through works from private and public collections from Europe and the United States the life and art of one of the most important Flemish painters of the Baroque period. The artist is situated in a transitional period between the Bruegel tradition of the 16th century and the genre and landscape painting of the following century.

This is the first time that just under half of his approximately 70 works will be brought together in his hometown. The exhibition, divided into four thematic sections, aims to bring out the painter’s versatility and artistic personality: among his works are grotesque faces, genre scenes and self-portraits.

The retrospective is part of the three-year Flemish Masters 2018-2020 program in the year dedicated to the Flemish Baroque.

In addition, an interactive itinerary has been set up in the historic center of Oudenaarde consisting of the works of artists, such as Thierry De Cordier, Wim Delvoye, Jan Fabre, Matthieu Ronsse, Jimmie Durham, Jan Van Imschoot, Kati Heck, and many others, who have interpreted Brouwer’s spirit.

The exhibition is curated by Jan Hoet Jr.
