The early years of Carlo Levi: an exhibition in Rome with unpublished

To mark the 120th anniversary of Carlo Levi's birth, the Carlo Levi Foundation in Rome presents an exhibition on the painter's early years and family environment. Presenting unpublished works.

The Carlo Levi Foundation in Rome presents from Oct. 7 to Dec. 7, 2022, the exhibition Carlo Levi, the Family, the Twenties, curated by Claudia Terenzi and organized on the occasion of the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the artist’s birth.

Twenty-eight paintings, most of them unpublished or little known, will be on display in an exhibition that will focus on the early years and thefamily environment in which Carlo Levi (Turin, 1902 - Rome, 1975) was formed. A nucleus of unpublished photographs from the Foundation’s photographic fund, placed in dialogue with the paintings, will also be on view.

“Color is fundamental in Carlo Levi’s painting, from the softest to the most expressive, sometimes striking tones,” writes Claudia Terenzi in the exhibition catalog. “In the 1920s we move from the more naturalistic colorism of the Turin landscapes of ’26 to the tonal effects of the views of Paris, from the constructive value in the still lifes and the portrait of his father of ’28, to the almost immaterial figurations of ’29,’30, evocative, intimist, and then, in the early ’30s, the strong characterization of color in an expressionistic sense, to exalt the broad, mellow, almost ’worked with fury’ brushstrokes.”
