The rediscovered kouros will be the focus of an exhibition in Palermo

The rediscovered and reassembled kouros will be the focus of an exhibition in Palermo and later in Catania and Syracuse.

On display from Nov. 11, 2018, to Jan. 13, 2019, at Palazzo Branciforte in Palermo are the torso of the Kouros of Lentini and the Testa Biscari, parts of a single precious Greek-era white marble statue from the Cyclades islands that have been reassembled thanks to the support of the Sicily Foundation.

The exhibition, titled The rediscovered kouros, thus presents to the public the two parts found in different eras in Lentini ( Syracuse ) and subsequently exhibited one in Syracuse at the Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum and the other in Catania at the Castello Ursino Civic Museum.

The reassembled Greek statue will be placed in the Sala della Cavallerizza, in dialogue with the archaeological collection; the reassembly operation was made possible thanks to a team of experts and was carried out in the laboratories of the Regional Design and Restoration Center of the Sicilian Region.

Regional Councillor for Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity Sebastiano Tusa, who promoted and curated the exhibition, said, “The scientific evidence confirms that the two finds belong to a single sculpture, and their reassembly constitutes to all intents and purposes a true new archaeological find that enriches Sicily’s cultural heritage. It is a source of pride for me to be able to state with certainty that this is a single work of art. The international scholars who collaborated on this undertaking are the scientific guarantee of the project. The multidisciplinarity with which we worked was the winning weapon: the best of scientific knowledge brought to bear for an extraordinary result.”

At the end of the exhibition in Palermo, the kouros will be on display from February 2019 at the Civic Museum of Catania and then transferred to Syracuse at the Paolo Orsi Archaeological Museum, where an international conference will be held.
