Turin, an exhibition showcases the works of Japanese Ukiyo-e masters


From Feb. 23 to June 25, 2023, the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Turin will host an exhibition dedicated to the masters of Japanese Ukiyo-e: Hokusai, Utamaro, Hiroshige and many others.

From February 23 to June 25, 2023, the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts in Turin is hosting the exhibition Utamaro, Hokusai, Hiroshige. Geishas, Samurai and the Myths of Japan.

The exhibition, curated by Francesco Paolo Campione, director of MUSEC in Lugano, and produced by Skira, presents the Japanese universe through a thematic itinerary divided into nine sections, with more than 300 masterpieces and some works never before presented in Italy, including prints, samurai armor, katanas, kimonos, and kakemonos, from the collections of MUSEC in Lugano, the Museum of Oriental Arts in Venice, the MAO in Turin, the Civic Museum ofOriental Art in Trieste, from the Fondation Baur Musée des Arts d’Extrême-Orient in Geneva and from important private collections.

The selection of prints features some of the greatest masterpieces of theUkiyo-e masters, including Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi, and Sharaku.

Specifically, these are 30 preparatory drawings, 24 landscape prints by Hiroshige, about 20 prints of “flowers and birds”(kachōga), about 40 prints of kabuki actors(yakushae), about 40 of the so-called “beautiful women” prints(bijinga), about 30 prints and 20 books of erotic character(shunga), and about 20 prints of warriors and heroes(mushae).

The last room is dedicated to the iconographic and stylistic legacy of Ukiyo-e with Hokusai’s Great Wave (pictured) and an immersive installation.

The exhibition is enriched by a regular counterpoint of applied art works that allow visitors to better perceive the contextual values of the printed representations. For all information you can visit the exhibition website.
