From October 2, 2026, to February 22, 2027, the MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon will host “VENUS – Valentino Garavani Through the Eyes of Joana Vasconcelos,” an exhibition that brings together over 30 haute couture and ready-to-wear creations by Valentino Garavani with the works of Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. The exhibition, on view in Galleries 1 and 2 of the MAAT Gallery, is part of the museum’s tenth-anniversary program.
Born from an original project by the Valentino Garavani Foundation and Giancarlo Giammetti, the exhibition arrives in the Portuguese capital in a new version designed specifically for the MAAT spaces. The exhibition layout was conceived by Joana Vasconcelos, who has created an installation in which the Italian couturier’s creations interact with her own artistic language through both well-known works and new pieces.
At the center of the exhibition stands *Valkyrie Venus*, a monumental textile sculpture created in 2025, from which the exhibition derives its title. According to the curatorial concept, the work interprets Valentino’s creative legacy through Vasconcelos’s artistic language. Surrounding the large installation are dresses and creations by Valentino Garavani, juxtaposed with some of the artist’s most recognizable works. The exhibition also features the new“ Crochet ” and “Paintings,” inspired by a motif by Josef Hoffmann found in the Valentino Garavani Fall/Winter 1989–1990 Haute Couture collection, as well as “Sacro Cuore,” a suspended textile sculpture. Also on display are “Marilyn,” the monumental shoes constructed using pots and lids; “Garden of Eden,” an installation that transforms the space into a labyrinth of artificial flowers; and “Independent Heart #3,” a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional “Cuore di Viana.”
The exhibition thus brings together two distinct creative practices—those of Valentino Garavani and Joana Vasconcelos—both characterized by a focus on craftsmanship, materials, and the transformation of forms and traditions into new forms of expression. The new version of the exhibition was designed specifically for the architecture and spaces of the MAAT, a museum dedicated to the intersection of art, architecture, and technology. The event is also part of a tour of the city of Lisbon that can include, in addition to the MAAT and the area’s contemporary architecture, the historic neighborhoods, palaces, and squares of the Portuguese capital. In this context, the press release highlights the Heritage Hotels—located in restored historic buildings in the city center—as a possible starting point for a stay dedicated to discovering Lisbon’s historical and cultural heritage.
