A videomapping reconstructs the colors of the Ara Pacis

A multimedia and immersive project, with videomapping and narration, tells the story of the Ara Pacis and recreates a polychromy of the monument very close to the original one. Starting March 27 at the Ara Pacis Museum in Rome.

Beginning Friday, March 27, the Ara Pacis Museum will offer its visitors a new immersive experience, made possible by an innovative multimedia project that allows them to rediscover one of Rome’s iconic monuments, commissioned by the Roman Senate to celebrate Octavian Augustus. The Altar is revealed, this is the title of the project, offers a narrative dedicated to the history of the Ara Pacis. Through light projections, the monument’s original colors will be reconstructed, giving the public a realistic and immersive effect of its ancient polychromy. The path is accompanied by a narration, enriched by informative content, music and sound suggestions, guiding the visitor on a journey of discovery of the work.

The initiative is promoted by Roma Capitale, Department of Culture and Coordination of Initiatives related to the Day of Remembrance, together with the Capitoline Superintendency of Cultural Heritage. The organization and management are entrusted to Zètema Progetto Cultura, while the realization is handled by AV Set Produzioni SpA with Luca Scarzella. Scientific direction, on the other hand, is entrusted to the Capitoline Superintendence.

Thanks to the technique of videomapping, which makes it possible to recreate a polychromy very close to the original one, several decorative elements of the monument will come to life: the western side, with reliefs of Aeneas in the act of sacrificing to the Penates and of the Lupercal; the eastern side, with representations of Tellus and the Goddess Rome; and, for the first time, also the two large side processions.

The narrative will accompany the audience not only in understanding the ancient history of the Ara Pacis, but also in the subsequent events of abandonment and rediscovery.

The narration is available through headphones in both Italian and English. The multimedia and immersive tours will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 8 to 11 p.m. (with times subject to change during the summer). Groups of up to 25 people will be accompanied by an operator and divided into three evening shifts, one every hour. The total duration of the tour, which takes place both outside and inside the monument, is about 45 minutes. Tickets can be purchased in advance online at the official website www.arapacis.it starting at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026.
