The Rijksmuseum will have a branch office in Eindhoven

A branch office of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will be built in Eindhoven in six to eight years. It will be built in a green area along the banks of the Dommel River.

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will have a branch office in Eindhoven thanks to a collaboration between the Rijksmuseum and the City of Eindhoven. A new cultural hub will be built where visitors will be able to view works from the Dutch museum’s renowned collection. The new museum will be built in a green area along the banks of the river Dommel, near the central train station; it will be designed as a dynamic space, capable of offering exhibitions from new perspectives, with a focus on creativity and craftsmanship. Founding partner ASML has announced its intention to significantly support the establishment of a leading cultural institution for the region in the coming years.

The Rijksmuseum Eindhoven will be envisioned as a vibrant and welcoming place, intended to foster encounters and exchange, while maintaining the Rijksmuseum’s identity. The architectural complex will cover an area of more than 3,500 square meters; executive plans will be drawn up over the next year. The goal is to open this new branch within six to eight years.

The museum will be located along the Dommel River, within a new park in the heart of the city, and will be within easy walking distance of Eindhoven Central Station; it will thus be accessible to both residents and visitors from other parts of the Netherlands and abroad.

In its role as a national museum of art and history, the Rijksmuseum tells more than eight centuries of Dutch history in an international context. Famous worldwide for masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, Rachel Ruysch and many others, the museum holds a collection of more than one million works that includes paintings, sculpture, furniture, glass and porcelain, fashion and textiles, photographs and drawings, as well as Asian art. The new location in Eindhoven will enable the Rijksmuseum to expand the visibility of its collections and make art accessible to an even wider audience.

Statements

“The Rijksmuseum belongs to everyone and is open to everyone. It houses a world-renowned collection of more than one million objects and is always looking for new ways to share it with audiences throughout the Netherlands,” said Rijksmuseum Director General Taco Dibbits. “The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven is an important step in making the collection even more accessible in the south of the country. The Rijksmuseum has long-standing ties to Eindhoven: Philips has been among the founders of the Rijksmuseum for 25 years, together with our main sponsors KPN, ING and VriendenLoterij. I look forward to welcoming ASML as a partner for Eindhoven.”

“This is an incredible opportunity and we are seizing it with both hands to turn it into reality as quickly as possible, together with the Rijksmuseum, ASML and other future partners,” commented Mayor of Eindhoven, Jeroen Dijsselbloem. “The Rijksmuseum Eindhoven will be a valuable contribution to the cultural landscape of Brabant and beyond, with art and history serving as a unifying force in our rapidly growing Brainport region. This museum is destined to become a place where everyone will enjoy a unique mix of history and creativity.”

“As an international company with roots in the Netherlands, ASML and its employees are proud to be associated with the Rijksmuseum and to support them in this initiative, together with the municipality of Eindhoven. Attracting this world-renowned institution to the region will not only allow more people to discover and appreciate the museum’s artistic and cultural treasures, but will also strengthen Brainport Eindhoven as a cultural destination and a great place to live and work,” said ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet.
