Throughout 2022, the public will have free access to the Etruscan sanctuary of Apollo of Veio. The decision was made possible by the agreement between the State Museums Directorate of the city of Rome and the Veio Park Regional Authority. Thanks to this link, the two entities have in fact decreed that the sanctuary of Portonaccio will be freely accessible every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout 2022.

The decision to open the sanctuary free of charge comes six months after the reopening of the sanctuary of Apollo of Veio in July 2021, and was also made in view of the visitor numbers, which according to the two entities have been very encouraging: in 30 total days of Sunday and midweek openings, there have been more than two thousand visitors, for an average of about 70 presences per day.

The sanctuary of Apollo, located in the archaeological area at Portonaccio, was located outside the ancient city of Veio, situated on a natural shelf overlooking the valley traversed by the Fosso della Mola (a tributary of the ancient Cremera). The sanctuary contains the oldest and most interesting example of a Tuscanic temple known to date: in ancient times it was decorated with a series of larger-than-life polychrome terracotta statues, including that of the group of Apollo and Hercules. Also near the temple was a pool intended for ritual ablutions and, further east, a large altar. Minerva and Apollo were worshipped in the temple: this was discovered from dedicatory inscriptions and statues at the top.
