The face of Syd Barrett, founder of Pink Floyd, comes to life on canvas in the hands of Noel Fielding. The British actor and musician stars in a music video (released last November on the group’s YouTube channel) made to mark the 50th anniversary of Wish You Were Here, Pink Floyd’s landmark work released in 1975. Throughout the Shine On You Crazy Diamond suite, Fielding paints Barrett on canvas, turning the clip into a tribute to one of the band’s best-known members and offering a new look at the legend surrounding the British musician.
As Sky Arte wrote, the choice to put the portrait at the center of the clip accompanies a major new feature on the album: Shine On You Crazy Diamond, originally divided into two parts, will now be offered as one continuous 26-minute track. Composed in 1974 by Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Richard Wright, the suite celebrates Barrett, who was forced to leave the group in 1968 due to mental health problems. The new stereo mix, edited by longtime Pink Floyd collaborator James Guthrie, restores the composition to its originally intended full form, overcoming the physical limitations of vinyl. The Wish You Were Here 50 reissue, available Dec. 12, offers the public several digital and physical editions, including a deluxe box set featuring Live at Wembley 1974 on clear vinyl and a photo book. The album features previously unreleased material and rarities, such as demos, alternate recordings and instrumental tracks, while the Blu-ray edition features a new mix in Dolby Atmos, also signed by Guthrie.
The Fielding video, along with the full suite, thus becomes the visual and aural centerpiece of the album’s 50th anniversary celebration. The portrait of Barrett appears as an artistic tribute, but at the same time as a link, recalling the musician’s contribution to rock history and the enduring influence of Pink Floyd. With Wish You Were Here 50, the British band combines sonic restorations, special editions, and new visual productions, offering both historical and younger fans an experience, true to the album’s original conception and tribute to Syd Barrett.
