Raphael Sanzio ’s St. Catherine of Alexandria will be exhibited at the Riga Bourse Museum in Latvia to mark the centenary of its Republic. In addition to the celebrations of the Republic of Latvia, the transfer of the painting from the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche to the Riga museum will serve as the start of a broader initiative to promote the Marche Region ’s tourism offerings in Latvia and Lithuania, with the launch (from June until September) of weekly flights by the Russian airline Teztour to Ancona/Falconara.
St. Catherine will remain on display in Riga until April 22.
The painting was probably made between 1500 and 1503 as a side part of an altarpiece, since both sides of the work are painted, however, the central part of the altarpiece has never been located and it is feared that it has not survived to this day, while the opposite side panel is in a private collection in the United States.r
