A new textile façade has been created to protect the mullioned window of the Bacci Chapel in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo, an innovative intervention promoted by the National Museums Tuscany Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with Canobbio Textile Architecture of Castelnuovo Scrivia. The structure, consisting of a textile membrane produced by Serge Ferrari installed on a metal frame, ensures optimal conservation of the wall paintings of the Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca, the wooden Crucifix by the Anonymous Master of Central Italy, the historic 19th-century Venetian roller stained-glass window, and the decorated stone surfaces of the mullioned window.
In addition to providing protection, the textile façade regulates interior brightness for a better view of the pictorial cycle, filters ultraviolet and infrared radiation, and helps maintain appropriate microclimatic conditions in the Bacci Chapel, thanks to a new sensor-datalogger monitoring system developed in collaboration with theOpificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence.
The project, made possible through Art Bonus with the support of the Arezzo Intour Foundation and the co-participation of the Ministry of Culture, will be presented on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 3 p.m. at a study day organized at the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo in collaboration with the Order of Architects PPC of the Province of Arezzo.
After institutional greetings from Father Francesco Bartolucci, parish priest of the Basilica, Stefano Casciu, Regional Director of National Museums Tuscany, Gabriele Nannetti, SABAP Superintendent for Siena, Arezzo and Grosseto, and Valter Bertini, President of the Order of PPC Architects of Arezzo, the speakers will elaborate on the project and illustrate the potential of textile materials applied to the protection and enhancement of architectural heritage.
