Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli has expanded the Higher Council for Cultural Heritage and Landscape by appointing art historian Claudio Strinati as chair of the Ministry’s technical-scientific advisory body. The appointment takes effect on June 15, 2026.
Born in Rome in 1948, Strinati earned a degree in Modern Literature from La Sapienza University of Rome in 1970. After teaching art history at the Liceo Classico in Cassino from 1971 to 1973, he joined the Ministry—now known as the Ministry of Culture—in 1974 as an art historian at the Superintendence of the Galleries of Genoa and subsequently at the Superintendence for Artistic and Historical Heritage of Rome. He served as Superintendent of the latter from 1991, then assumed the directorship of the Polo Museale Romano until 2009, and, from 2009 to 2013, held the position of General Staff Director.
During his career, he taught Art Law at the University of Udine from 1987 to 1989 and served, from 2001 to 2005, on the Scientific Committee of the Musée du Luxembourg of the French Senate, collaborating on the organization of exhibitions dedicated to the great masters of the Italian Renaissance, including Raphael and Veronese.
He has curated numerous exhibitions, including the 2008 exhibition dedicated to Sebastiano del Piombo, held in Rome and Berlin. The author of essays published in specialized Italian and international journals, including *Bollettino * d’arte, *Storia dell’arte*, *Prospettiva*, *Ricerche di Storia dell’Arte*, and *The Burlington Magazine*, he has published several books, including *Raffaello universale* ( 2010), *Il mestiere dell’artista* (2014), *Il Giardino dell’arte* (2020), and *Caravaggio/Vermeer: Shadow and Light* (2021).
An Academician since 2015, he was elected Secretary General of the National Academy of San Luca in 2021. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Barberini Corsini National Galleries, collaborates with the Teatro di Roma on the lecture and conference series “Luce sull’Archeologia,” and has chaired the “Dialogues: Raccontare l’Arte” Society since 2015. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of *Arte Dossier* and contributes to the daily newspaper *la Repubblica*. Throughout his career, he has been awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Legion of Honor of the French Republic.
