Four drawings enter the Uffizi collections. These include Jackie Kennedy's horse

The Uffizi Galleries is enriched with four more drawings. These include the horse that belonged to Jackie Kennedy.

The Uffizi Galleries collection of drawings is still being enriched: the Friends of the Uffizi Galleries have purchased four drawings for the museum, two made by the 17th-century painter Baldassarre Franceschini and two made by the Baroque sculptor Giovanni Battista Foggini. These works include a drawing of a horse from behind by Foggini that belonged to U.S. first lady Jackie Kennedy; it was purchased by the nonprofit from Christie’s.

Sotheby ’s, on the other hand, sold the sheet Neptune Chases Coronis and two preparatory studies of kneeling Apostles, done by Baldassarre Franceschini, known as Volterrano, for his fresco in the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata in Florence.

"We are delighted to be able to enrich, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Uffizi Galleries, our collection of these two great artists. Franceschini’s two sheets complement and complete a series of preparatory drawings for the Santissima Annunziata fresco already in our collection. In his time Volterrano was appreciated not only as a painter but also as a draughtsman, and in fact these drawings have great independent artistic value apart from their function as preparatory studies. Similarly, Foggini, who was very famous as a sculptor and architect, was also a celebrated draughtsman, and these works testify to that in an exemplary way," said the director of the Uffizi Galleries, Eike Schmidt.

“With our American Friends we share the same love for a heritage that is not only Florentine or Italian but world-wide. Let’s start 2020 by making our contribution to expanding the collection of the museum we love most!” added Friends of the Uffizi Galleries president Maria Vittoria Rimbotti.
