Giovanni Verga's original photographs will be acquired by the Sicilian Region for 225,000 euros

Verga's photographic corpus will be acquired by the Sicilian Region: the Regional Council resolved to exercise the right of first refusal by authorizing the expenditure of 225 thousand euros to purchase the photographs.

The Sicilian Region will acquire the original photographic plates of Giovanni Verga, thus becoming part of the public documentary heritage linked to the memory of the great writer, whose centenary of his death is being celebrated this year.

The rich material was sold at auction in Turin in recent days, and the Regional Council resolved to exercise the right of first refusal by authorizing the expenditure of 225,000 euros to purchase the photographs.

According to the regional president, it is a due act to make the precious Verga photographic material that has come down to us a public heritage. Consisting of 448 photographic documents that are also particularly interesting from a historiographical point of view, the corpus is a significant testimony to Verga’s artistic sensibility. Declared of artistic and historical interest by the Department of Cultural Heritage in 2018, the collection was auctioned and purchased by a private foundation. The acquisition by the region will enrich the heritage linked to Verga’s legacy.

The offices of the regional department of cultural heritage will activate, by the date when the right of pre-emption expires, all the necessary administrative procedures to allow the photographic collection to remain in Sicily. Through his writings and studies, Verga left memories of the society of the time, describing it in his novels with a full-bodied visual representation of places and people.
