Inaugurated at Platform 21 a multimedia totem pole to remember the victims of the Holocaust

A multimedia information totem in remembrance of the victims of the Shoah has been inaugurated at Milan Central Station, platform 21. A project of the Ministry of Culture, the Italian FS Group and the Shoah Memorial in Milan.

A multimedia information totem has been inaugurated at Milano Centrale station to commemorate the victims of the Shoah and the thousands of people who, between 1943 and 1945, were deported to concentration camps, starting precisely from platform 21 of the Milan airport. Inaugurated as part of initiatives related to Holocaust Remembrance Day, it was unveiled in the Sala Reale of Milano Centrale station by Italian Republic Senator for Life Liliana Segre, Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, FS Italian Group CEO Luigi Ferraris, Milan Shoah Memorial Foundation President Roberto Jarach, and Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala.

The totem pole is a project of the Ministry of Culture, the FS Italiane Group and the Milan Shoah Memorial and was placed at the head of Platform 21 as a reminder not to forget and not to give in to indifference and the banality of evil. It contains directions to reach the Shoah Memorial 200 meters from the Central Station, in Edmond Jacob Safra Square 1, and a video, produced by the Ministry of Culture also with the contribution of theIstituto Luce - Cinecittà, with the testimony of the deportation to Auschwitz of the then 13-year-old Liliana Segre, which took place on January 30, 1944 from platform 21 itself.

The goal is to prompt remembrance and reflection among travelers and invite them to visit the Shoah Memorial. The area where the Memorial now stands was originally used for the movement of mail wagons and, between 1943 and 1945, was the place where thousands of Jews and political opponents were loaded onto freight wagons that, after being transported to the overhead level of the tracks, were hooked up to convoys heading to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Mauthausen and other concentration and extermination camps or to Italian assembly camps such as those at Fossoli and Bolzano.
