MusA, the new app to make art usable for all through augmented reality

Presented by the State University of Milan, the new smartphone app MusA, which aims to make art accessible to all also through augmented reality

The new MusA (Accessible Museum) app is coming. Presented by theState University of Milan and created by the Department of Computer Science in collaboration with ANS (National Association of the Subvisioned) for DescriVedendo, MusA is an inclusive accessibility project that aims to expand the enjoyment of works of art to all, and in particular is designed for those with visual impairments. The smartphone app automatically recognizes artworks when they are framed and shows a very detailed and objective description of them, created using the DescriVedendo method devised by ANS. The app also provides an automatic reading of the description and, thanks to augmented reality, during the reading the app highlights the parts of the work that are being described. MusA also allows the user to interact: by touching a part of the work on the smartphone, the app will give a description of it.

MusA will be accessible to all visually impaired people through integration with accessibility tools already available on smartphones, such as magnifiers for visually impaired people and text reading for blind people. Special features, such as filters, will also be available for visually impaired people, allowing them, for example, to see the work in inverted colors or with increased brightness.

The project, coordinated by Sergio Mascetti, professor of Computer Science at the State University of Milan, is funded by the Milan Community Foundation, and is being presented during the International Week for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities sponsored by the City of Milan, and will end in March 2021.
