New lighting system for the Scrovegni Chapel

The Scrovegni Chapel in Padua has been fitted with a new and innovative lighting system made by iGuzzini.

The marvelous Scrovegni Chapel in Padua has been further enhanced thanks to a new and innovative lighting system created by iGuzzini.

A"perceptual restoration" operation will be carried out through LED fixtures, environmental sensors and software applications: the sensors will detect variations in natural light in order to activate an intelligent lighting system capable of adapting artificial light according to various environmental conditions.
This will ensure a better color perception of the frescoes and a 60 percent energy saving compared to the previous lighting system.

“The perceptual restoration work on the frescoes of the Scrovegni Chapel is a challenge that we accepted with great enthusiasm, an exceptional example testifying to our activity in support of cultural heritage, in Italy and worldwide. Thanks to the most advanced technologies in the field of lighting, it will be possible to appreciate Giotto’s masterpieces better than the Master himself and his contemporaries could do in the 1300s. In fact, at any time of the day, regardless of the different natural light conditions, it will always be possible to enjoy these wonderful works of art to the fullest of their beauty and authenticity. Thanks to light, we can restore the past to its original splendor and project it into the future, more alive than ever. This is the greatest satisfaction for someone who has always been dedicated to the research and technological development of light in all its aspects, and who wholeheartedly promotes light as a tool for social innovation,” said Adolfo Guzzini, Chairman of iGuzzini Illuminazione.

“The Chapel and its precious frescoes have been the subject of care by the Institute since the 1950s always supported by scientific studies that have directed both interventions on the environment and the restoration of the paintings. For the lighting we have once again worked alongside iGuzzini to select the technological solutions best suited to the conservation and enjoyment of the 14th-century frescoes,” added Gisella Capponi, Director of the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il Restauro.
