Reopens after more than two decades the Ancient Theater of the Herculaneum excavations

After more than two decades, the Ancient Theater of the Herculaneum excavations reopens on an experimental basis: visitors will walk through the underground route.

After about two decades since it was closed to the public, the Ancient Theater of the Herculaneum excavations will be reopened on a trial basis from June 16, 2018.

This was the first monument discovered at the Vesuvian sites, attracting great interest from travelers.

Visitors will descend more than 20 meters below the eruptive material and explore the site, where they will see, in addition to the remains of the ancient building, artifacts, graffiti and frescoes.

It will be exciting to walk through the network of Bourbon shafts, visit the stage front via the grandiose gallery, and admire in one of the oldest tunnels the imprint of the head-portrait of the Roman proconsul Marcus Nonius Balbus, which came off his torso as a result of the eruption.

PAErco Teatro Tour is part of the Campania by Night program. The staff will provide visitors with safety helmets, disposable raincoats and flashlights.

The initiative will be held on June 16,17,23,24, June 30, July 1, October 6,7,13,14, 2018. Tours will start at 6:30 pm and end at 8:45 pm.

Tickets: Full 15 euros, reduced 10 euros for 18-30 year olds and holders of Campania Artecard cards. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Ticketone.it and at the ticket office counter at the Herculaneum excavations daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (until noon on the day of the visit).
