To combat the high summer temperatures, Roma Capitale is launching *Il grande freddo*, a project designed to offer residents air-conditioned spaces where they can find relief from the heat and, at the same time, enjoy free cultural experiences. The initiative provides a network of spaces spread across the city’s various neighborhoods, transforming movie theaters, libraries, and cultural facilities into air-conditioned refuges.
The program includes the opening of eleven movie theaters, eleven libraries, the Sala Squarzina at the Teatro Argentina, andthe Auditorium at the Palaexpo, thereby expanding the range of accessible spaces during the hottest days of summer. Starting the day after the project’s launch, the participating movie theaters will host free screenings open to the public. The Sala Squarzina at the Teatro Argentina will be open on an exceptional basis with books available for browsing, while the Palaexpo Auditorium will welcome visitors with the exhibition “Revelation. Lorenzo Meloni,” sponsored by Emergency.
From July 23 to August 4, visitors will also have free access—without a reservation—to the eleven libraries participating in the initiative, where water will be distributed free of charge.
The project was presented at the Campidoglio by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Councilor for Culture Massimiliano Smeriglio, together with representatives from the Rome Library and Cultural Centers System, the Rome Capital Climate Office, and the Lazio Regional Association of Cinema Operators (ANEC). Organized in collaboration with ANEC Lazio, the Rome Library System, the Rome Theater Foundation, the Palaexpo Special Agency, and Rome’s Civil Protection Agency, the initiative aims to transform cultural venues into welcoming spaces where people can find relief from the heat, as well as opportunities for socializing, recreation, and cultural engagement.
Film screenings will take place daily with two showings: the first between 1:00 p.m. and 2:45 p.m., depending on the theater, and the second between 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., varying based on the film’s runtime. The same film will be screened simultaneously in all participating theaters.
Among the participating theaters are Cinema Adriano in Municipality I, The Screen Cinemas in Ottavia, Cinema Lux, the UCI Maximo on Via Laurentina, and the UCI Roma Est in Lunghezza, as well as other venues located throughout the capital’s various municipalities. The library network also covers numerous areas of the city, from the Renato Nicolini Library in Corviale to the Vaccheria Nardi Library, as well as the Elsa Morante Library—temporarily housed at the Ostia Marina—and the Joyce Lussu Library on Via Costantino. Their distribution across the city has been designed to ensure that residents have an easily accessible climate-controlled refuge near their homes.
Access to all activities is free and available while space lasts.
