Stephanie Rosenthal will be the new artistic director of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam starting in the spring of 2027. The appointment was announced on September 30 by the museum’s Supervisory Board. Rosenthal is currently director of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project, where she has been tasked with guiding the institution toward its opening to the public, scheduled for December 11, 2026, and with developing its artistic vision and inaugural program.
Her curatorial approach is rooted in care, collaboration, and engagement with the public. In Abu Dhabi, she has worked with artists, curators, partners, and visitors to develop a transcultural curatorial perspective and a collection strategy focused in particular on women artists, First Nations artists, and artists from historically underrepresented regions.
Throughout her career, Rosenthal has held leadership positions in Abu Dhabi, Berlin, London, Munich, and Sydney. From 2018 to 2022, she was the first woman to serve as director of the Gropius Bau in Berlin, where she developed an exhibition program focused on diversity, featuring solo shows by Yayoi Kusama, Lee Bul, and Wu Tsang. From 2007 to 2017, she served as Chief Curator of the Hayward Gallery in London and, in 2016, as Artistic Director of the Sydney Biennale. She recently joined the board of CiMAM, an international network dedicated to modern and contemporary art, and is a visiting lecturer at NYU Abu Dhabi.
