From December 13, 2019,the second collection of art figurines will be available on Italian newsstands: the Artonauts. The Twentieth Century: in search of stolen treasures.

After the extraordinary success of the first art figurine collection, the Artonauts return with a new adventure, discovering the historical avant-gardes of the early 20th century together with the Monuments Men, the silent heroes who during World War II saved Europe’s artistic heritage from one of the greatest thefts in history. Thanks to Daniela Re and Marco Tatarella, founders of the nonprofit social enterprise WizArt, the second collection of Artonauts aims to raise awareness of the protection and preservation of cultural heritage among young children.

In this second collection, the protagonists of history are confronted with the historical avant-gardes of the first half of the 20th century: each figurine will reveal a detail of a work, composing masterpieces by Matisse, Picasso, Munch, Klee, Kandinsky, Marc, Klimt, Miró, Chagall, Modigliani, Goncharova, Boccioni and Mondrian, just some of the artists presented in the album. But the Artonauts will not be alone; they will be accompanied by their grandmother Artemisia and the Monuments Men: heroes who risked their lives to protect the greatest treasures of art and civilization from the destruction of World War II. The four protagonists will travel back in time and find themselves in the United States of 1943, commissioned by President Roosevelt to save works of art endangered by the war and thus set off in search of the Bruges Madonna, a masterpiece by Michelangelo stolen by the Nazis. They will travel across Europe opening windows of insight into the artists of the historic avant-garde movements, who were often censored by the Nazi regime for producing degenerate art. However, the published works do not correspond to those historically found by the Monuments Men, with the exception of the Bruges Madonna.

The album, dedicated to children aged 7 to 14, is even richer and more interactive: it consists of 116 pages, almost twice as many as the previous album, 15 illustration plates, as many as 112 works of art to reconstruct thanks to the 324 figurines, and 24 riddles, including “sharpen your eyesight,” rebuses and word games, as well as real clues to carry out the treasure hunt and find the Madonna of Bruges. 25 pairs of collectible Twin Cards will allow children to train their memory, recognizing works from details. In addition, a map illustrates the places of preservation of the works included in the album. Finally, to narrate the close link between visual arts and music that characterized the twentieth century, seven QR codes will allow children to listen to as many musical suggestions related to seven different artists featured in the album.

And again, thanks to the In viaggio con gli Artonauti contest, lucky people who find a Golden Ticket in the sticker packs will be able to enjoy an experience created with Elesta Art Travel, a tour operator specializing in cultural travel, which has set up special itineraries dedicated to the winners and in perfect Artonauti style: a visit to an art city, a museum or an experiential tour to discover the beauty of an Italian city, for a total of 21 prizes.

In addition, this second collection is dedicated to Khaled al-Asaad and in particular to all those whose lives have contributed to the preservation of cultural heritage, the heritage and memory of the community. Hence, in fact, comes the collaboration with the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art, which will provide its expertise and resources in order to create thematic insights that will be published on Artonauti’s social media.
