Half a billion euros is coming from MiBACT to restore stores and businesses in 29 tourist cities. Here are which ones.

The Ministry of Culture has earmarked half a billion euros for those involved in selling goods or services to the public in major tourist cities. More than 500 million euros will thus go to restore those who, this year, suffered a drop in turnover of at least a third compared to 2019 due to theabsence of international tourism. The grant, which is non-refundable, had been established by the August decree.

“Art cities,” said Cultural Heritage Minister Dario Franceschini, “are particularly suffering from the contraction of international tourism. It is necessary to support those who live and work in these realities, encouraging the vitality of the commercial fabric as much as possible. For this reason, important measures such as the non-refundable contribution for commercial activities open to the public in historic centers were introduced in the August DL. It is essential to ensure resources capable of helping these realities overcome a critical moment and find themselves prepared for when visitors return from all over the world to enjoy the beauty of our cities of art.”

The contribution will be determined on the basis of a variable percentage that will be applied to the difference between June 2020 turnover and fees with those of June 2019. There are 29 cities involved in this measure: they were selected on the basis of the ratio of foreign tourists to provincial residents. Below are all 29 cities with, in parentheses, the ratio of foreign tourist presences/residents: Venice (42.6), Verbania (26), Florence (21.5), Rimini (15.3), Siena (11.6), Pisa (9.9), Rome (7.6), Como (7.2), Verona (6.4), Milan (5.8), Pesaro and Urbino (5.7), Bologna (4.2), La Spezia (4.2), Ravenna (4.2), Bolzano (4.1), Bergamo (3.8), Lucca (3.7), Matera (3.4), Padua (3.3), Agrigento (3.3), Syracuse (3.0), Ragusa (3.0), Naples (2.2), Cagliari (1.8), Catania (1.7), Genoa (1.6), Palermo (1.3), Turin (1.3), and Bari (1.3).
