In South Tyrol, a 3.5-kilometer art trail connects the Zumis parking lot to the Pianer Kreuz chapel: eight installations inspired by Genesis guide hikers as they explore the landscape and the theme of Creation.
On the Rodengo-Luson Alpine Plateau in South Tyrol, eight art installations retrace the seven days of Creation along a route that combines contemporary art, spirituality, and landscape. The Path of Creation winds throughthe Rio Pusteria Ski and Alpine Pastures Vacation Area, on a plateau characterized by pastures, forests, and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The works do more than simply illustrate the biblical story; they invite hikers to reflect on the relationship between nature, humanity, and the universe.
The trail winds from the Zumis parking lot to the Pianer Kreuz chapel and guides visitors through the stages of Genesis: from the contrast between light and darkness to the formation of the celestial vault; from the emergence of plants and forests to the presence of the sun, moon, and stars; and finally to animal life—represented by fish and birds—and humankind. Among the works are “Heaven and Earth” and “Light and Darkness,” while an artistic bench located near the Pianer Kreuz chapel is dedicated to the seventh day, designed as a space for rest and contemplation.
The installations are by Matthias Kostner, Mirco Pitscheider, Filip Moroder Doss, Rita Pöll, Thomas Comploi, Silvia De Giorgi, Giovanni Demetz, Judith Röck, and Hanna Pittschieler. Each work offers a personal interpretation of the theme of Creation.
“Contemplating the beauty of creation is an inner journey to reconnect with the profound mystery of God, nature, and ourselves,” says parish priest Artur Schmitt. “For the artists, visual language thus becomes a poetic key capable of expressing those emotions and that sense of wonder that words alone cannot convey.”
A Family-Friendly Trail
The Path of Creation starts at the Zumis parking lot, at an elevation of 1,740 meters, and leads to the Pianer Kreuz chapel, at 1,900 meters. The route is 3.5 kilometers one way, with an elevation gain of 160 meters, and takes about an hour and a half. The trail is family-friendly and can even be navigated with strollers.
Along the way, there are several places to stop: the Oberhauser mountain hut, about ten minutes from the starting point; the Naturhotel Runa, reachable in about forty minutes; and the Rastner and Starkenfeld mountain huts, about an hour and a half away. To reach Zumis, take the Almbus shuttle (line 415), which connects to the Rio di Pusteria train station. The ride is free for Almencard holders. Alternatively, the plateau can be reached by car via the road from Rodengo.
