Since August, the churches in Pozzuoli that were declared uninhabitable followingthe bradyseismic emergency have been undergoing safety measures to protect the works of art housed within them. This was announced by the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the Naples Metropolitan Area, which, following initial inspections of the affected buildings, has begun the process of relocating paintings and sculptures.
These activities are being carried out in collaboration with the Fire Department, the Carabinieri’s Cultural Heritage Protection Unit, the Civil Protection Agency, and the Diocese of Pozzuoli. The initiative aims to protect the works until the buildings’ safety measures are completed; the design phase for these measures is currently underway.
The artifacts are being carefully documented before being transferred to a temporary storage facility, where they will be kept in safe conditions. The Superintendency’s goal is to allow the works to be returned to their places of origin once the buildings have been deemed safe for occupancy. Among the documented interventions are those involving the painting *The Martyrdom of Saints Gennaro and Procolo* by Agostino Beltrano, housed in the Cathedral of Pozzuoli in the Rione Terra district. The Superintendency has released several images of the painting’s removal.
